ScotsTurf 009

With over 80 exhibitors displaying hundreds of products – many of them on show in Scotland for the first time – plus a schedule of informative education presentations and exciting live product demonstrations, as well as award ceremonies, this month’s IOG Scotsturf show (November 11 & 2) will inform and entertain open space professionals of every discipline.
Being staged at Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre, this must-see event for all golf course and groundscare professionals, as well as local authority decision-makers and arboriculturists, for example, looks set to build on the success of recent shows by being a one-stop shop for all the products, technologies, techniques and strategies needed for effective and efficient open space management.
Show Manager Roy Daniels says the year-on-year support for the event is founded on the presence of a varied mixture of exhibitors as well as a programme of show features designed to add tremendous value to the time spent there by visitors.
“In addition to a comprehensive range of products to suit every budget and designed to make life easier and more effective, IOG Scotsturf works hard to ensure that its free education seminars address all the issues of relevance,” he says.
“Some of the subjects under discussion this year include pesticide approvals, weed control, integrated turf management, and health and safety in respect of tree work and working on slopes,” adds Roy, “while the presentations of the Innovative and New Product Awards, and the IOG Awards to the Industry, will be complemented by the ever-popular Scottish Groundsman of the Year Award ceremony and the presentations to the land-based colleges. It all adds up to something for everyone,” he says.

Two engine options are available – a 34 HP Diahatsu turbo charged unit and a Kubota 35 HP naturally aspirated option. The machine’s high throughput is provided by dual vertical feed rollers and a 6 inch x nine inch letterbox opening, offering an exceptional crushing capacity and a new square blade system.

Groundsman Industries was established in 1990 and are known primarily for their range of tractor mounting and pedestrian operated aerators and core collectors. These products have been designed to penetrate the top 13cm (6") of soil and are classified as surface aerators.
Over the past eight years, the company have been researching and developing their range of Turf Multi Cutters with the goal of producing a machine which has very high cutting performance with very low hand-arm vibration levels at operator handles. The result is a fourth generation product known as the TMC range. The TMC2 was launched in September of last year and targeted at general landscaping and hire industries, has now been followed up by last months launch of the TMC4 machine.
The TMC4 is a four wheel drive machine for precision thickness cutting for applications where the turf is likely to be cut for relaying purposes. An automatic Guillotine Chop-off Attachment is available for the new TMC4 machine, to cut the turf sod to exact lengths for handling and relaying. As the name ‘Turf Multi Cutter’ suggests, a wide range of quick-change blades are available for different widths of cutting, multi strip cutting and the option for centre mounting blades for de-compacting or mole draining to 12cm (5") deep. The reputation already gained by the TMC2 over the past year has spun over to the TMC4 with a back-log of orders for the company.

This is STMs first full season with the RoboFlail, which won the New Product and Innovation Award at Scotsturf 2008, and its success has backed up STM’s faith in the product. It was designed in conjunction with the STM Continental engineer Frank Hemmerich and an established manufacturer of tracked vehicles. These zero-turn remote controlled machines are in use over the whole of the UK and the Continent, and there is consistent positive feedback from customers and contractors. The versatility and safety of the unit make it an ideal choice. With increasing requirements to meet as regards Health and Safety standards, the RoboFlail is ideal for steep banks and difficult areas. The positive side of no hand-arm vibration problems and reduced operator fatigue are also in there as very strong plus points for considering this robot mower.
By being available with one of two types of deck – standard rotary and open-front rotary, STM have made the RoboFlail range even more unassailable.
The machine operates on tracks and has fully effective zero-turn created by contra-rotating them. The operator can work up to 300 metres away but this is not recommended as you need to be able to see obstacles, and the machine has design features like a self-levelling tank that show the amount of design consideration that has been put in.

Simon Tullett took the machine on a roadshow in Scotland and that was a great success. The area for which Dundee City Council are responsible takes in estates such as Pentland, which is renowned for its steep banks. Not only that, but these areas are mowed on a fortnightly basis, and the previous method – using hover mowers – was beginning to cause concern on Health and Safety issues. The demo took place in their area, and that was enough to convince them. The order was placed, the machine delivered, training undertaken and off they went.
Jock Paterson of Dundee took time out to talk about the machine: ‘It’s been very successful so far. We’ve had the machine for a few months now and the operators are getting better with the procedure on the controls’ He explained that theirs is a particularly hilly area and the introduction of the RoboFlail has saved them a lot of problems – plus the bonus that the operators aren’t so tired at the end of the shift!

To cover sales of the RoboFlail in specific areas of Scotland, STM have appointed Fraser C Robb of Drymen, Glasgow as dedicated dealers. They will be looking after areas from Dumfries, north to Argyll and Bute. STM have a long association with Fraser Robb and are very pleased to be able to offer them this opportunity to follow on from the successful roadshows carried out by Simon Tullett and Bob Deans in Scotland.
